Dr. David Blumenthal, a health care advisor for Sen. Barack Obama, and Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a senior economic policy adviser for Sen. John McCain, sat down with CNBC's John Harwood Thursday to discuss the candidates' healthcare plans.

"We estimate somewhere between 20 and 30 million of the currently uninsured will be insured under the McCain plan," Holtz-Eakin said during the discussion (see videos at left for both advisors' full remarks).

"I think the McCain plan is actually a dagger right at the heart of our employee-sponsored insurance program," Blumenthal said.

"We believe that our plan is funded to cover ... at a minimum 98 percent of people without insurance, and that by making it affordable with the cost controls that we have built in and reducing the administrative costs that are now present in the individual market and the small-group market, that we can make it affordable for all Americans."
