Coupons are a thing of the past, right? Wrong. Thanks to the web and today’s turbulent economy, the old-fashioned coupon is making a comeback – online.

Kimberly Palmer, senior editor and author of the Alpha Consumer blog  for U.S. News & World Report, joined Carmen on Thursday’s show to give her top five web sites for the best deals and discounts:

5. RetailMeNot.com

Get free shipping on everything from shirts to skirt steaks. Before you hand over $10 for shipping, visit this site, which offers free shipping codes, 20% coupons and more.

4. ShopItToMe.com

Think of this site as your personal shopper. Plug in your favorite brands and your size and it will monitor all types of stores and send you a daily alert when things you might like are on sale – and in your size.

3. MyGroceryDeals.com

Don’t put anything in the cart until you go here. Type in your zip code and this site will tell you which stores are offering discounts on soda, cereal, fruit and more.

2. Spoofee.com

Here you get the best deals on the web for printers, computers, televisions and other electronics. The site’s forums are full of coupons and discounts that its users recommend.

1. PriceGrabber.com

Don’t burn gas going to the mall anymore. Let this site do the work for you. Whether you’re hunting for shoes, video games or jewelry, PriceGrabber lets you compare prices at hundreds of stores and then make your purchase online.

For some of Carmen’s favorite sites, check out her Resources & Tools page here. And if you've got shopping sites you swear by, send them to us below and we'll post them in the blog.

Hi Carmen,
I work with a payment provider, eBillme, which is a way for consumers to shop online without a credit card and without releasing any financial information to the retailer or the payment provider. I thought you might be interested in an online gas card deal they are running until September 30th.

The company will be giving away free Gas Cards valued at $10 for purchases of $50 or more and $20 for purchases of $100 and more. All online shoppers who are first time eBillme users are eligible to receive the Gas Cards.

Online shoppers simply select eBillme at checkout when completing their orders. An eBill is e-mailed to the customer which can be paid using available funds in an online bank account. No financial information is ever exposed to the retailer or the payment provider reducing the risks of identity theft and fraud, and since eBillme purchases are made using available cash, it is a way for consumers to manage spending and reduce credit card debt.

The promotion will be running on participating eBillme retail customer websites including Buy.com, Crutchfield, TigerDirect, and more. All the promotion details can be found by visiting https://www.ebillme.com/index.php/inserts/gas/. The company is hoping to give consumers the opportunity to try a new way to pay cash online while helping to relieve some of the financial burden at the pump. --Alicia, PA

I think your audience will also be interested in www.extrabux.com , a shopping Web site that offers its members cash back on every purchase from hundreds of top online retailers. Membership is free. Starting in October 2008 the site will also offer comparison shopping that for the first time combines all the tools necessary to get the lowest online price from reputable retailers. --Robert, CA
