Major Fire in London's Financial District Under Control

A big fire in London's financial district was brought under control about seven hours after it was first reported Thursday, but 50 firefighters are still at the scene in East London, a London Fire Brigade spokesman said.
At the height of the fire, 100 fire-fighters and 20 fire engines were at the scene, trying to contain the blaze on Tabernacle Street, East London.
Some streets in the area were closed including part of City Road south of Old Street, Bloomberg Square and Worship Street.
Currently ten fire engines are still at the scene.
The fire was reported at 4:30 am local time and a column of smoke was seen rising above the area for several hours.
"On this occasion, there was nobody in the building," the London Fire Brigade spokesman told CNBC.
Earlier press reports suggested some people may have been in the building, which houses a restaurant and offices.
Around 75 percent of the building's roof and third floor were damaged by the blaze, while the ground, first and second floors suffered 50 percent damages, the spokesman said.
Trading on London Stock Exchange was not affected.
