First came Black Thursday. Now, Wal-Mart Stores is inaugurating Cyber Saturday.
Fanning the flames of holiday shopping hype, Wal-Mart on Friday announced it would start Cyber Monday two days early, slashing prices on its website to allow shoppers to buy state of the art television bundles for as much as $500 off.
In a holiday shopping season that's started even earlier than usual, Wal-Mart will feature big savings on electronics and other fare on its website on Nov. 30, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, until Dec. 6. Among other major consumer draws, Wal-Mart will shave prices on Microsoft's Xbox, Apple's 32GB iPad, and Hewlett-Packard's Sleekbook.
"Every year there's a bigger appetite for Cyber Monday, so we're giving our customers great deals and rolling back our free shipping minimum to $35, helping them extend their budgets this holiday season," Wal-Mart said in a statement.
In a nod to the increasing importance of mobile and social network-savvy buyers, Wal-Mart will also send early shopping invitations to its Facebook fans and mobile app subscribers.
