Atlanta craft beer takes flight to New York

Air travel is about to become a little "sweeter" for some consumers flying between two of the nation's busiest airports.

Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewing Company is partnering with Delta Air Lines to offer the brewery's flagship brew, 420 Extra Pale Ale, on Delta's 34 daily flights between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International and New York's LaGuardia Airport, starting April 1.

"Delta is a world-class organization, as well as a local neighbor, so we couldn't be more excited about this alliance and the opportunity for SweetWater to be featured on board," said SweetWater Founder Freddy Bensch.

The partnership was made possible after SweetWater began canning two of its most popular beers earlier this month.

"Our new cans eliminate the glass restrictions that previously held us back from offering our beer in great spots like airplanes, stadiums, beaches and more," said Bensch. "This is an exciting time for craft beer."

SweetWater is the latest craft brewery to find an opportunity in putting canned craft beer in the skies.

Colorado's New Belgium Brewing and Southwest Airlines announced in February that New Belgium's flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale would be the first craft beer offered by Southwest and its partner AirTran.

Not long after moving into cans last year, Boston Beer inked a deal with JetBlue to make its Samuel Adams brand available on that airline.

Delta Airlines officials said the SweetWater partnership reflects not just a demand among air travelers for more options but also the desire for some local flavor.

"As Atlanta's hometown airline, it's exciting that we can now offer Atlanta's hometown brew on board," said Joanne Smith, Delta's senior vice president, In-Flight Service.
