The online retail world in the United States can be ruthless and Wal-Mart knows it. But for the first time in a decade, its Web sales grew faster than the online retailing giant Amazon, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Wal-Mart's global Internet sales rose 30 percent last year, while Amazon's registered a sales growth of "only" 20 percent, the newspaper said, citing data from trade publication Internet Retailer.
However, Amazon still surpasses its rival with online sales in electronics, media and other products with $67.8 billion, six times higher than Wal-Mart's.
Wal-Mart is also betting on international expansion, in countries where the company does not have stores yet.
"I fully expect us to be serving countries just through e-commerce in the future," said Neil Ashe, chief executive of Wal-Mart's global e-commerce division.
