Name: Mennekes
Founded: 1935
Location: Kirchhundem, Germany
Employees: c. 1,000

Founded in 1935 by Aloys Mennekes, the company that bears his family name is one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial sockets and plugs.

In 1975, Aloys Mennekes' sons, Dieter and Walter, took over the day to day running of the company, with Walter CEO since 1991, the same year that the company set up its first subsidiary outside of Germany, Mennekes Electric Limited, in the U.K..

With nearly 1,000 employees worldwide, in 2013 the company had a consolidated turnover of over 120 million euros. Over half of this figure is down to exports, and according to its website Mennekes has, "subsidiaries and agencies in over 90 countries."

"Here at Mennekes, innovative people create and market quality products. This is the source of our success, and it is condensed in our brand. The owner family supports this spirit by focussing on the ideas, not on the date of return on investment," Christopher Mennekes, pictured here with Walter Mennekes, told CNBC.com via email.
