A truck carrying five sandbar sharks from south Florida crashed on I-95 on its way north to New York, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. One of the sharks died, and the rest are being transported to a local aquarium.
The truck was on its way to the New York Aquarium near Coney Island, which has been rebuilding after suffering major damage during Superstorm Sandy in 2012.
Neither the driver nor the two other passengers were injured in the crash.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that the truck crashed in Volusia Country near Edgewater in the northern part of the state. The truck veered off the road and was stuck in the center median, the site reported.
The 5-foot-long sharks were each being transported in individual aquariums, FHP spokeswoman, Sgt. Kim Montes, told the Journal.
