  • Hong Kong shares seen firmer, defensives in favour Wednesday, 3 Oct 2012 | 8:51 PM ET

    HONG KONG, Oct 4- Hong Kong shares were set to open slightly higher on Thursday with defensive sectors such as telecoms continuing to attract investor interest although gains are likely to be capped by weakness in oil producers after crude prices slumped overnight.

  • *Air Canada load factor a record 84.9 pct, traffic up. Oct 3- Canada's two largest airlines, Air Canada. The load factor on Air Canada's flights to Australia, the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America made the biggest jump, to 82.9 percent from 79.4 percent in the same period last year.

  • Oct 3- Fitch Ratings has assigned a' BBB+' rating to the $350 million aggregate principal amount 2.00% coupon senior unsecured notes due 2018 and $450 million aggregate principal amount 3.25% coupon senior unsecured notes due 2022 issued by Realty Income Corporation. Fitch currently rates Realty Income as follows:.

  • Russia's Rusal gets bauxite levy waived in Jamaica Wednesday, 3 Oct 2012 | 3:40 PM ET

    KINGSTON, Jamaica-- Jamaica has agreed to waive a bauxite levy at Russian aluminum giant UC Rusal's last operational plant on the island. As part of the one-year concessionary pact, Rusal will maintain its workforce of 600 workers at its Ewarton Alumina Refinery. Jamaican Energy Minister Phillip Paulwell says this will be a $100 million investment.

  • Book: Obama hoped to try bin Laden, if captured Wednesday, 3 Oct 2012 | 3:37 PM ET

    WASHINGTON-- A new book says President Barack Obama hoped to put Osama bin Laden on trial, showing the U.S. commitment to due process under law, if the al-Qaida leader had surrendered during a U.S. raid in Pakistan last year. A team of Navy SEALs raided bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan in May 2011 and killed bin Laden.

  • Usain Bolt camera to be auctioned for charity Wednesday, 3 Oct 2012 | 1:22 PM ET

    Bolt grabbed the camera from Jimmy Wixtrom, of Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, and snapped shots of the crowd and teammate Yohan Blake, who finished second. Wixtrom put the camera up for sale this week on e-Bay, saying the proceeds will go to the Swedish Cancer Society and Bolt's own foundation for children in Jamaica. eBay is owned by eBay Inc..

  • Sanofi, Bristol shake up alliance as patents end Wednesday, 3 Oct 2012 | 1:46 AM ET

    This will give Sanofi sole commercial control of the two treatments, although Bristol-Myers will keep rights to Plavix in the United States and Puerto Rico. In return, Sanofi will pay Bristol-Myers royalty payments through 2018 on its sales of branded and unbranded Plavix worldwide, excluding the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and on sales of Avapro/Avalide.

  • "Our new leisure group will benefit from combining the low cost carrier with the strong brand reputation of Air Canada Vacations and leveraging the established marketing and distribution channels of both Air Canada Vacations and Air Canada," Air Canada CEO Calin Rovinescu said in a statement.

    Oct 2- Air Canada, Canada's biggest airline, said it would form an integrated leisure group by combining its tour operator business with its planned low-cost airline. The airline named Michael Friisdahl chief executive officer of the leisure group, which will include tour operator business Air Canada Vacations.

    JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.-- Republican challenger Todd Akin went on the offensive against Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri's Senate race on Monday, claiming that her husband's businesses profited from a federal stimulus act provision that helped finance low-income housing.

  • SD tribe's lawsuit against beer stores dismissed Tuesday, 2 Oct 2012 | 8:31 AM ET

    The lawsuit was filed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe, which governs the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where alcohol is banned. Four beer stores named in the suit sold the equivalent of 4.3 million 12- ounce beer cans last year even though they're in Whiteclay, a Nebraska town with about a dozen residents on the reservation's border.
