Sunoco to pay $117,000 to settle hazmat complaint

PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Sunoco Inc. is paying a $117,000 fine to settle alleged violations of hazardous waste storage regulations at one of its former plants in northeast Philadelphia.

The EPA said it cited Sunoco for violating a federal law governing the storage and disposal of hazardous waste. The alleged violations were discovered during an inspection in September 2010.

Sunoco sold the facility in July 2011.

The alleged violations related to storage of phenol sludge, a leaking lead-acid battery and light bulbs containing hazardous material.

As part of the settlement announced Thursday, Sunoco has neither admitted nor denied liability for the alleged violations.
