DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday that its U.S. sales were flat in September as increases in sales of cars and SUVs were weighed down by lower truck sales.

BY THE NUMBERS: Ford sold a total of 174,976 vehicles last month, relatively flat compared with 175,199 in the same month last year.

TOP SELLERS: Ford sold 55,074 of its F-Series pickup trucks, up 1.2 percent year-over-year.

HOT MODELS: Car sales rose 1.6 percent to 50,694 vehicles, led by strong sales of the Ford Focus.

Sales of SUVs rose 8.7 percent to 56,625. Demand for the new Ford Escape small SUV jumped 14.5 percent to 23,148 vehicles, while sales of the Explorer large SUV grew 18.7 percent to 13,453.

Overall truck sales fell 7.6 percent, largely because of the discontinuation of the Ranger small pickup. The Ranger was a strong seller last September.
