NEW YORK -- U.S. stock futures are up slightly after a private survey found businesses hired fewer workers in September than in August.

In the last half-hour before trading, Dow Jones industrial average futures are up 13 points at 13,424. Standard & Poor's 500 index futures are up two at 1,442. Nasdaq futures are up six.

ADP, a company that processes payroll data, says businesses added 162,000 jobs last month. That's down from 189,000 in August, and that figure was revised lower.

The big economic report this week comes Friday, when the government reports how many jobs the country added in September and updates the unemployment rate. It stands at 8.1 percent.

European markets are mostly higher. Asian markets closed mixed.
