Grains up and down in Virginia in 2012

RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia wheat and barley production is down this year, while oat production is up.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services reports that wheat producers averaged 65 bushels per acre this year, down from last year's yield of 71 bushels an acre. Total wheat production was also down 12 percent from 2011 for a total of 15.6 million bushels.

Oat production for 2012 was 300,000 bushels. That is up 54 percent from the previous year.

Finally, barley growers produced just over 3 million bushels. That's down 51 percent.

The National Agricultural Statistics Service surveyed Virginia producers in September.
