WALL STREET OPENS HIGHER ON DRAGHI, DATA
U.S. stocks rose at the open after labor market data came in within expectations and following encouraging comments by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on tools to tackle the region's debt crisis.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 40.66 points, or 0.30 percent, to 13,535.27. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index
gained 3.54 points, or 0.24 percent, to reach 1,454.53. The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 5.45 points, or 0.17 percent, to 3,140.68.

The medical device maker estimated third-quarter revenue below its earlier forecast citing "an unusually high" number of customers turned to competitors.
Brokerages Canaccord Genuity, Robert W. Baird & Co, Mizuho Securities USA, BMO Capital Markets and ThinkEquity Llc cut their price targets on the stock.

A slew of brokerages cut their price targets on the stock, saying the weak economy will continue to weigh on the company that has been plagued by operating problems and slow growth in its computers and printers businesses.

Data-integration software maker Informatica estimated third-quarter results that fell far short of analysts' expectations as business in Europe weakened.

September sales at U.S. retailers looked solid, not stellar, as shoppers finished up their back-to-school buying and put the brakes on more big spending before the holiday season.
While higher gasoline prices and uncertainty about the upcoming election may weigh on shoppers' minds, consumer sentiment has ticked higher, hitting a four-month peak in September.

The apparel and accessories retailer posted a 0.8 percent decline in comparable store sales for September as higher prices dissuaded female shoppers from visiting its stores.
The fall in same-store sales was contradictory to expectations of a rise of 1 percent, according to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
** COSTCO WHOLESALE CORP , $100.73, up 1.1 pct (0943 ET)
The U.S. retailer reported a better-than-expected 6 percent rise in September sales at stores open at least a year, helped by higher gasoline prices and stronger dollar.

The company reported lower than expected third-quarter results.

T-Mobile USA, which plans to merge with MetroPCS, will have to overcome technology hurdles to be able to take on bigger rivals Verizon Wireless , AT&T Inc and Sprint.

The social media company said it reached the 1 billion active monthly users threshold last month, and is up by 45 million users since June.

The hotel operator reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Wednesday on stronger group and corporate business and lower costs.

Nomura Equity Research upgraded the world's largest online marketplace's stock to "buy" from "neutral." Lazard Capital Markets raised its price target on the stock to $55 from $52.
** MURPHY OIL CORP , $59.03, up 1.4 pct (0949 ET)
UBS Investment Research raised the energy company's price target to $62 from $54.
** GOOGLE INC , $762.74, up 0.03 pct (0950 ET)
The company revised up the bill for job cuts at its money-losing Motorola Mobility mobile phone unit in the third quarter and warned of further restructuring that may result in "significant" additional charges.
** UNITED PARCEL SERVICE INC , $73.20, down 0.25 pct (0951 ET)
RBC Capital Markets downgraded the stock to "sector perform" from "outperform" and cut its price target to $75 from $84.
** APPLIED MATERIALS INC , $11.08, up 0.71 pct (0952 ET)
The company said it would cut its workforce by 6 to 9 percent to reduce costs as it struggles with a slowdown in its chip manufacturing equipment business and troubles at its solar and display groups.

** AVERY-DENNISON CORP , $29.96, down 4.7 pct (0954 ET)
Diversified U.S. manufacturer 3M dropped its effort to buy Avery-Dennison Corp's office and consumer products business on Wednesday, about a month after U.S. regulators raised anti-trust concerns over the proposed deal.
** ENERSYS , $34.49, down 4.4 pct (0957 ET)
Stifel Nicolaus downgraded the industrial battery maker's stock to "hold" from "buy."
** CALPINE CORP , $17.81, up 0.33 pct (0958 ET)
The largest U.S. independent power generator said it will buy an 800-megawatt power plant in Texas from Bosque Power Co Llc for $432 million plus adjustments.

UBS Investment Research downgraded the videoconferencing company's stock to "neutral" from "buy" and cut its price target to $10 from $12.

Jefferies & Co started the health information technology company's stock with a "hold" rating.
** TIME WARNER CABLE INC , $99.85, up 1.5 pct (0959 ET)
Needham & Co raised its price target on the second-largest U.S. cable provider's stock by $20 to $115, saying it expects the company to report stronger operating margin in the third quarter as a result of more efficient cost cutting measures.
