WALL ST FALLS AT OPEN AFTER WORLD BANK'S ASIA OUTLOOK
U.S. stocks declined after the World Bank cut growth forecasts for East Asia, highlighting concerns about the global economic climate and corporate profits on the cusp of the quarterly earnings season.
The World Bank reduced its growth forecasts for the East Asia and Pacific region and said there was a risk the slowdown in China could worsen and last longer than many analysts have forecast.
The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 43.47 points, or 0.32 percent, to 13,566.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 6.71 points, or 0.46 percent, to 1,454.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 22.79 points, or 0.73 percent, to 3,113.39.
** CARMAX INC , $32.02, up 9.7 pct (1220 ET)
ITG Investment Research analyst John Tomlinson published a positive note on the largest used car retailer in the United States.
** CELADON GROUP INC , $16.47, up 8 pct (1220 ET)
Dahlman Rose & Co raised its price target on the trucker's stock to $23 from $21.
** MARATHON PETROLEUM CORP , $57.63, up 5 pct (1221 ET)
The company struck a deal to buy BP's Texas City refinery and related infrastructure for up to $2.5 billion. The purchase would make Marathon the fourth-largest refiner in the United States.
** RENEWABLE ENERGY GROUP , $5.66, down 20.5 pct (1222 ET)
The company said it would post an adjusted core loss for the third quarter as biodiesel prices fell by more than a third.
** GREEN DOT CORP , $10.28, down 20 pct (1222 ET)
** NETSPEND HOLDINGS INC , $10.24, down 4.7 pct (1223 ET)
Shares of prepaid card companies Green Dot and NetSpend fell after Wal-Mart Stores Inc and American Express Co
announced a partnership to offer customers an alternative to debit and checking accounts.
** ALLIANCE FINANCIAL CORP , $45.93, up 16.5 pct (1224 ET)
** NBT BANCORP INC , $21.46, down 3.1 pct (1224 ET)
NBT said it agreed to buy Alliance Financial in a deal valued at about $233.4 million to expand its footprint in New York.
** NATIONAL BANK OF GREECE SA , $2.81, up 12.4 pct (1225 ET)
The Greek lender offered to buy Eurobank Ergasias SA
in an all-share deal.
** AFFYMETRIX INC , $3.65, down 15.3 pct (1225 ET)
The genetic analysis products maker forecast its third-quarter revenue below Street estimates, citing the tightening academic funding environment worldwide that reduced revenues in its gene expression and eBioscience business units.
The company estimated a total revenue of $80 million compared with analyst estimates of $84.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
** VRINGO INC , $5.39, up 15.7 pct (1226 ET)
The mobile phone software maker's unit, Vringo Infrastructure Inc, filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the UK unit of Chinese telecommunications equipment maker ZTE Corp .
** PROGRESS SOFTWARE CORP , $18.80, down 12.4 pct (1226 ET)
The database management software maker said it could see some revenue slippage in the current quarter as a result of the resignation of Chief Executive Jay Bhatt.
** TPC GROUP INC , $45.40 up 11.6 (1227 ET) ** INNOSPEC INC , $33.71, down 1.8 pct (1227 ET)
The chemicals maker said it received a buyout proposal from Innospec for $721.3 million, topping an offer made by private equity firms First Reserve Corp and SK Capital Partners.
** INTERSIL CORP , $7.46, down 8 pct (1228 ET)
J.P. Morgan Securities cut the chipmaker's stock to "underweight" from "neutral". The brokerage also cut its price target on the stock to $5.00 from $8.00.
** NETFLIX INC , $73.26, up 10 pct (1229 ET)
Morgan Stanley upgraded the video streaming company to "overweight" from "equal weight," saying the company is poised to leverage its domestic cost structure and potentially become a global video platform.
** QLIK TECHNOLOGIES INC , $20.25, up 5.8 pct (1229 ET)
The market was relieved that the business analytics software maker did not release preliminary results along with its announcement of the date of its third-quarter earnings release, two analysts said. Concerns about the sector heightened last week when Informatica Corp issued a profit warning.
** OCLARO INC , $2.39, down 9.2 pct (1303 ET)
The optical components maker announced preliminary first-quarter revenue of $149 million - below analysts' estimates of $162.2 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
** SWIFT ENERGY CO , $18.21, down 4.8 pct (1230 ET)
Suntrust Robinson Humphrey downgraded the oil and natural gas producer to "neutral," saying the company could miss its fourth-quarter output guidance.
Swift Energy lowered its full-year production forecast last month as its oil fields were hit by Hurricane Isaac.
** NAVISTAR INTERNATIONAL CORP , $22.91, up 8 pct (1231 ET)
The truck and engine maker agreed to appoint three new members to its board, avoiding a proxy fight with activist investors Carl Icahn and Mark Rachesky who demanded changes.
** ALLSCRIPTS HEALTHCARE SOLUTIONS INC , $13.79, up 3.4 pct (1231 ET)
Bloomberg reported that the healthcare IT company received offers from a private-equity consortium, including Blackstone Group LP and Carlyle Group LP .
