MELBOURNE, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Australian shares fell 0.4 percent on Wednesday, with some of the biggest declines recorded by gold miners after bullion prices headed lower offshore.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index

fell 17 points to 4,488.7 by 2315 GMT. It rose 0.5 percent to 4,505.3 on Tuesday, a 14-month high.

New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index

eased 0.6 percent to 3,882.8 after U.S. stocks fell on increasing worries about third-quarter earnings and the International Monetary Fund warned on global growth.

Gold producer Newcrest Mining

fell 1.8 percent to A$27.99 after the price of the precious metal fell for a third day on worries about a global slowdown. Rival St Barbara

fell 3.4 percent.
