Family Dollar names Safeway exec to marketing post

NEW YORK -- Family Dollar on Monday appointed Jocelyn Wong as its chief marketing officer.

Wong, who will also serve as senior vice president, recently served as group vice president of shopper marketing for the supermarket chain Safeway Inc. Safeway recently launched a customer loyalty program that offers personalized discounts based on past purchases. The program is aimed at helping the company retain customers lured away by discount retailers, including dollar stores.

Prior to joining Safeway in 2010, Wong held various positions at Procter & Gamble Co.

Wong will report to Family Dollar Stores Inc. President and Chief Operating Officer Michael Bloom, the discounter said Monday.

Earlier this month, Family Dollar reported that its fourth-quarter net income and revenue rose as shoppers came to its stores in search of bargains.

Family Dollar, based in Matthews, N.C., currently runs more than 7,400 stores in 45 states.

Shares of Family Dollar Stores will start Monday trading at $66.40, up about 15 percent since the start of the year.
