MUMBAI, India -- Starbucks has opened its first store in India in an historic building in south Mumbai as the Seattle-based coffee giant seeks growth in a market long associated with tea drinkers.

Chief executive Howard Schultz says India, along with China, are "at the core" of the company's growth strategy.

Two more shops are scheduled to open in Mumbai next week, followed by New Delhi early next year.

A 12 ounce cappuccino will sell for a little over $2. The menu features items such as Elaichi Mawa croissants _ made with cardamom and milk solids _ and tandoori paneer rolls for local tastes.

Starbucks operates in India through a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages called Tata Starbucks.
