Rutgers sets merger vote for November
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The boards that oversee Rutgers University have set a vote for next month to formalize their takeover of most of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
The special joint meeting of the Board of Governor and Board of Trustees is scheduled for Nov. 19.
The vote is a milestone for a major reorganization of higher education in New Jersey.
Lawmakers approved a plan in June to break up UMDNJ and give most of its programs and properties to Rutgers effective July 1, 2013. Gov. Chris Christie, who pushed for the plan, signed the bill.
The schools still have to work out the technical and financial details of the transition.
