Steelers ex-doc has no comment on steroid charges

PITTSBURGH -- A former Pittsburgh Steelers doctor and his defense attorney declined to comment at his initial federal court appearance on illegal steroid-distribution and other charges.

A federal magistrate has ordered 62-year-old Dr. Richard Rydze (ridz) to be jailed over the weekend until another appearance Monday. The magistrate will decide then whether the doctor should remain in jail until trial.

Federal authorities don't list the team or its players as having gotten steroids from the doctor. But Rydze left the team in mid-2007 after law enforcement officials said he had purchased $150,000 worth of steroids from an Orlando, Fla., pharmacy.

A federal prosecutor says she wants Rydze jailed until trial. She says he has continued to prescribe drugs even after losing his federal license in July.
