Internet users were unable to reach the Amazon homepage for almost an hour Thursday afternoon.

Although the website could not be reached by using the URL Amazon.com, it was accessible by using links within Amazon to enter the site.

"The gateway page of Amazon.com was offline to some customers for approximately 49 minutes. Other pages of the site were accessible and AWS was not impacted," the company said in a statement to CNBC.

While internet users were unable to reach the website via its homepage, the company's web service status page stated that its cloud services were working properly.

Twitter users from around the world were some of the first to notice the homepage being down. One hacker group even tweeted that it was responsible for the outage.

Amazon's stock was down over three percent in afternoon trading.
