Counterfeit Goods, $325 Million Bust

It's a story straight out of Hollywood -- multiple federal agencies used undercover agents and wiretaps in an international investigation to thwart $325 million in counterfeit goods originating in China from entering a port near New York. Twenty-nine defendants from two overlapping criminal rings were charged in the probe, one of the largest of its kind.

The feds confiscated 135 containers of illicit goods ranging from fake Coach and Louis Vuitton bags to Nike and UGG footwear at the Newark-Elizabeth, N.J., port last March. The U.S. economy loses $250 billion a year due to counterfeit products, and China is the largest manufacturer of the contraband, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
