An Under-the-Radar Portfolio Pick: Pro
Only about 3 percent of all equity assets are in this area, which could help reduce portfolio risk, Gregg Fisher of Gerstein Fisher says.

One equity asset represents a tiny portion of investment portfolios and could be a smart long-term bet, Gregg Fisher of Gerstein Fisher said Thursday.

"If you look at the mutual fund universe as the aggregate of all investors we can observe, there's only about 3 percent of all equity assets in real estate or real estate securities, which tells us that the majority of investors have a very small percentage of their portfolios in this asset class," he said on CNBC's "Fast Money."

Fisher said that global real estate is more accessible to investors than ever before via mutual funds and exchange traded funds, as well as real estate investment trusts.

"So by bringing global real estate into your portfolio, you should increase the return and reduce the risk of your total portfolio more than you would than by adding more stocks," he added.

An investor who is around 40 years old, Fisher said such an investment could be ideal.

"Our advice would be for this investor to be mostly invested in riskier assets, such as global equities, global real estate, commodities. In our opinion, for that kind of retirement asset, a fixed-income allocation wouldn't make sense," he said.

Fisher added a caveat: "However, I would strongly recommend that before they do that they have at least two years worth of cash reserves in the bank, so they can take this long-term view we all talk about."
