At BurgerFi, the secret has been spilled on purpose since the company's first store opened in 2011. The burger chain features its off-menu items on in-store menu handouts, but not on the big board itself.
Some of these off-menu items came about as a way to simplify the ordering process for picky but regular customers.
Steve Lieber, BurgerFi's brand ambassador and franchise sales director, recalled the origins of the Hippie Veggie, a sandwich created by a frequent diner in Florida.
"Instead of one vegetable patty, he wanted two," Lieber said. "He didn't want them fried—he wanted them grilled. He didn't like the wheat bun—he wanted a regular bun. He didn't like the lettuce, tomato secret sauce. He liked green neon relish."
To help out cashiers, BurgerFi added the item to its secret menu and payment system. The sandwich is now selling in the hundreds.
