Britain's Vodafone Group has raised its preliminary offer to buy Kabel Deutschland, Germany's largest cable operator, a source close to the situation has told CNBC.

Vodafone's original offer was for 80 to 82 euros per share, but CNBC understands that the new offer is for around 85 euros per share, matching a rival offer made by Liberty Global.

The new offer from Vodafone values Kabel Deutschland at 7.5 billion euros ($10.04 billion).

When contacted by CNBC, both companies declined to comment.
