UPDATE 1-Mexico's America Movil reports 2nd-qtr profit up 8 pct
MEXICO CITY, July 25 (Reuters) - Latin America's biggest phone company America Movil said on Thursday its second-quarter profit rose 8 percent but it missed estimates by analysts who had seen the company benefiting from a stronger Mexican peso.
The company, which is controlled by billionaire businessman Carlos Slim and his family, reported a profit of 14.193 billion pesos (US$1.09 billion) compared with 13.157 billion pesos a year ago.
Analysts, on average, had expected the company to report a profit of 17.76 billion pesos, according to a Reuters survey of six analysts.
Core profit, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), fell slightly from the year earlier to 65 billion pesos, as many currencies in Latin America weakened against Mexico's peso in the quarter.
Revenue rose 1.6 percent to 194.8 billion pesos.
