UPDATE 2-New York Times site experiences outage for a few hours
Aug 14 (Reuters) - The New York Times website was unavailable for roughly 2 hours on Wednesday and it is not clear what caused the outage.
People accessing nytimes.com got a message that the service is unavailable late Wednesday morning.
A New York Times Co spokeswoman said they are looking into what caused the problem, which also affected the company's email.
The communications department's Twitter feed offered one clue: "We believe the outage is the result of an internal issue, which we expect to be resolved soon."
Meanwhile, the New York Times directed readers to follow specific Twitter accounts and its Facebook page to see its news.
The Twitter feed for its opinion section said, "Readers, don't fret. Ifremains down, we are ready to tweet op-eds and editorials in 140-character increments."
The newspaper's website and digital apps for smartphones and tablets are important initiatives for the company as more people ditch the print edition.
Two years ago, the New York Times launched a subscription model for its website and other digital products in a closely watched experiment as publishers try to get more money from readers.
