Jacksonville offers free beer to draw fans
There may be no such thing as a free lunch, but for some fans of the Jacksonville Jaguars there will be something even better this Sunday: free beer.
The Jaguars, one of the NFL's worst teams in recent years, is banking on the free beer promotion sponsored by Bud Light to draw fans to EverBank field Sunday for Jacksonville's game against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Jaguars organization took to Twitter Thursday morning to offer fans two free drinks with the purchase of a ticket for at least $45. The promotion lasted two hours. There was no word on how many tickets were sold, with the team telling Bloomberg News it would not release sales figures related to promotions.
USA Today noted that beer costs 44 cents an ounce in Jacksonville, in line with the NFL average, making a standard 12-ounce beer $5.28. Jacksonville was likely trying to avoid a television blackout in the local market, which, per NFL rules, occurs when a team fails to sell out its stadium. Sports Illustrated said Jacksonville currently ranks 30th in attendance in the 32-team NFL.
The Jaguars were 2-14 in 2012 and are off to an 0-3 start this season. The Jags have scored just 28 points in the first three games of the season, including a 28-2 drubbing at the hands of Kansas City at EverBank Field on opening day.
