Apple snags Nike Fuel Band designer

Apple has recruited one of Nike's top people to help it develop wearable devices, according to a report.

According to a report from 9to5Mac, the iPhone maker has hired Ben Shaffer, the former studio director of Nike's Innovation Kitchen, which is the research and development department where new product designs are made.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment, but a Nike spokesperson did confirm that Shaffer was no longer with the company.

The hire is significant because Shaffer brings a lot to the table when it comes to designing wearables. He last reportedly worked on Nike's Flyknit, which is the company's new ultra-lightweight shoe line.

Nike's Fuel Band, a wrist band that tracks a wearer's activity, is just one product that has come out of Nike's Innovation Kitchen.

It has been speculated for some time now that Apple will roll out an iWatch or some sort of band that can be worn around the wrist.

Apple executives, including CEO Tim Cook, have even been vocal fans of Nike's Fuel Band and hinted that something similar is in the works.

During an interview earlier this year at the All Things D Conference Cook said that he was interested in wearable devices for the wrist and said that he also wore Nike's Fuel Band.
