Facebook phone rumors resurface
Though there's speculation that Facebook will buy BlackBerry to develop a branded Facebook phone, the social network probably would acquire specific cellphone patents instead, according to one tech analyst.
After rumors of a Facebook phone surfaced last year, CEO Mark Zuckerberg denied plans to build one, but it would be naive to take that statement at face value, said Christina Warren, senior technology analyst at Mashable. Facebook might already have a prototype, she said.
Whether BlackBerry's technology is used or not, the cellphone market could be challenging for Facebook, according to Warren. Consumers must be convinced that a Facebook phone is worth buying, and as younger socials look to different platforms, including WhatsApp and Snapchat, demand for a Facebook phone could fall short.
In social networking, Google's plans to emphasize photo storage and editing capabilities in the Google Plus platform won't give the search giant a competitive edge over Facebook, Warren said, adding that sites such as Flickr and 500px pose a greater challenge as photo-sharing competitors.
