Amazon, which has become virtually synonymous with online retail, is looking into providing brick-and-mortar retailers with a credit card payment system based around its popular Kindle devices, sources told The Wall Street Journal.
The scenario is just one of the approaches the Seattle-based company is considering to strengthen its presence in physical retail, where shoppers still make 90 percent of their purchases. Amazon may also offer retailers other options such as website development and data analysis, according to the sources.
Last year, Amazon acquired some technology and hired employees of a San Francisco-based mobile payments start-up.

If the company goes through with its plan, it would be walking in well-trodden territory. Newer tech companies like Square and Intuit already offer credit card payment systems that pair with Apple and Android devices as well as well-established firms like NCR and Verifone.
But among Amazon's advantages are a vast collection of stored credit card information from its 230 million customers, which it could leverage into a "mobile wallet" service shoppers could use to pay for purchases with their phones or other devices.
