Aston Martin: No more sourcing from China

Marek Reichman, Director of Design at Aston Martin, says the firm will relocate manufacturing back to the U.K after a recall of gas pedals raised concerns about sourcing parts from China.

Aston Martin has great quality control checks and is confident that problems surrounding a potentially defective car part can be resolved, an executive from the luxury car maker told CNBC on Wednesday.

U.K.-based Aston Martin said last week it was recalling more than 17,000 cars due to a potentially defective part after a discovery that a Chinese sub-supplier was allegedly using counterfeit plastic material in part of the accelerator pedal.

"We have great quality control checks that have noticed some issues and problems and we are resolving that, no customers have really been affected by it," Marek Reichman, director of design for Aston Martin, told CNBC Asia Squawk Box.

"We will resolve the issue, bring the manufacturing back to a controllable state in the U.K.," he added.

The news about the recall has raised some concerns about the sourcing of key car parts by global car manufacturers from China without adequate quality control procedures.

According to U.K.-based Aston Martin, there have been no reports of any accidents related to potentially faulty parts.

Talking about Aston Martin's push into other areas of luxury retail, Reichman said this was related to the lifestyle associated with owning an Aston Martin – a car that has featured in a string of James Bond films.

"Part of it is the Aston Martin lifestyle," said Reichman.

"Designing the product and a sports car is important but it's the lifestyle around the sports car, we've taken what is quintessentially a British sports car and produced a luxury brand around that," he added. "So we have range of jewelry, bicycles, we have other things that support the brand and its values."
