Amazon's 3-D phone a 'gimmick': Pro

Photos of Amazon's alleged 3-D smartphone leaked today to tech blogger BGR with very little fanfare. According to sources close to BGR, the phone will use 3-D effects for its wallpaper, shopping for items in its market, as well as its map application. The leak comes one day after Amazon announced its new Fire TV sold out, but did not disclose how many units it sold.

An entrance into the smartphone market this late in the game may be an uphill battle for the tech company.

Amazon is rumored to be working on a 3-D smartphone, seen in this photo obtained by BGR.

On CNBC's "Fast Money," BGR Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Geller wasn't a fan.

"This is a gimmick. It's probably going to be $300 or $400 at least," he said. "It's not going to compete with Samsung, and it's not going to compete with Apple. I just don't really get the point."

Amazon did not return CNBC's request for a comment.
