Stanford president: Obama administration deserves an 'F'

Stanford University President John Hennessy says the Obama administration deserves an "F" for its handling of technology and cybersecurity issues at home and abroad.

On Tuesday, Hennessy, along with other Silicon Valley leaders, met at VMWare's headquarters for a "State of the State of Silicon Valley" panel moderated by CNBC "Fast Money" anchor Melissa Lee. The panel took place amid a volley of condemnations from the U.S. and China over cybersecurity breaches.

Earlier this month, the U.S. indicted five People's Liberation Army members for cyber-espionage crimes against U.S. companies that included U.S. Steel, Alcoa and SolarWorld. Chinese media reports later claimed that Cisco and IBM may be complying with the United States' own cyber-espionage program.

Hennessy's criticism of the administration began with a review of the circumstances surrounding Edward Snowden's leak of key security documents. "Here's a relatively low-level consultant that has full access to all the information inside the NSA. Would you trust them with your personal information in that circumstance?"

Regarding recent accusations from Beijing, Hennessy said that the United States has lost its moral standing on the world stage, and that the situation is "a disaster."

"The situation with China and cyberattacks on many companies here in the Valley … how does the U.S. stand up and say, 'This is wrong. You can't do this. You have to stop this,' when in fact, the U.S. is being accused of doing the exact same things in those countries?"
