Don't be so quick to ignore the stock market in the summer. You might be missing out.

Investors who trade ticker symbols for flip-flops and swimming trunks between June and August might be missing out on some secret "summer stock" winners. There's a small group of 14 stocks , including single-cup coffee brewer Keurig Green Mountain, fertilizer maker CF Industries and online retailer eBay in the Standard & Poor's 500 that have beaten the market each and every summer for the past five summers straight, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data from S&P Capital IQ.

These stocks, on average, have gained 13.4% during the summer months of the past five years. That's nearly double the 7.3% average gain of the broad S&P 500 during the same time periods.

The biggest summer stock winner the past five years has been Keurig. The company which makes money selling consumers single-cup coffee makers and related equipment, has been a perennial summer winner. Shares jumped 13.1% last summer, easily topping the broad market's 7.3% gain during the season.

Seeing a maker of fertilizer, CF Industries, do well in the summer makes logical sense. Shares of the stock has risen 18.5% on average over the past five summers. Electronic gadget maker, Apple, too has been a big winner in summers' past. The stock has delivered an average gain of nearly 20% over the past five summers. Last summer, Apple's stock added 13%.

Many investors assume that energy stocks are the best places to be in the summer, thanks to summer traveling. But just one energy stock, Anadarko Petroleum, is in the 16 best summer stocks list.

But it's true that consumer-focused stocks have been the top performers. There's a three-way tie of the sector with the most stocks in the group: Consumer staples, consumer discretionary and information technology. Two of the technology stocks in the summer stocks list are all consumer focused: Apple and eBay. Motorola Solutions is a wireless communications company that's more focused on business and government.

Can these summer stocks have another winning summer? Timing stocks is extremely difficult, if not impossible, over the long-term much less for a single season. But two of the summer stocks get a "buy" rating from S&P Capital IQ (a rating of 4 or 5 denotes a buy) as well as an "attractive" rating from stock research firm New Constructs. Those stocks are Discover Financial and eBay. New Constructs uses a proprietary method of measuring the present value of future cash flows.
