Squawking Quirky foot fetish & wealth inequality

Talking Squawk, the official "Squawk Box" blog, provides tidbits, insights, and some sarcastic reflections on the WEEK THAT WAS and the WEEK TO COME from the notepad of the show's senior executive producer.

Andreessen on ...

Marc Andreessen is a walking, talking idea machine.

He's so much fun to talk to about all kinds of hot button topics from the world of high tech to high finance, and everything in between.

Squawk co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin sat down with the venture capitalist and got all kinds of good stuff out of him including why Andreessen thinks Edward Snowden is a traitor; how Apple and Google are both winning; and what to make of all the consolidation in the telecommunications industry.

Andrew also sat down with eBay CEO John Donahoe and got him to talking about bitcoin's future role at PayPal and the reason he owns some of the digital currency.

Holy Piketty

Thomas Piketty

French economist and author Thomas Piketty has stirred up all kinds of chaos with his new book "Capital in the Twenty-First Century." For those living under a rock, the book focuses on the wealth and income inequality in Europe and the U.S. since the 18th Century. He also makes the case that unless capitalism is reformed, inequality will continue to swell—leading to economic and social instability.

What?! We booked the author who wrote the book that attacks capitalism on the show, and the network that is known as the home of capitalism? Of course, we did because we are "Squawk Box" and if nothing else, we enjoy a good fight!

But truth is, the conversation was very cordial dare I say it, at times downright productive. At the end, we were left wondering if the buzz was more about the radicals on both sides of the inequality debate rather than where Piketty really stands on the matter.

We broke up the conversation into a few parts below. Check it out and then you can decide where the truth really lies: Piketty on the Fed, Piketty on wealth inequality and Piketty on income disparity.

Indy 500 champ

Check out AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson's tweet and pic with Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay!

Here's the interview with the new Indy champ—the first American to win the race since 2006. Ryan addressed the question, he says, that everyone asks him.

Dr. Love

He's a magician of corporate lovemaking, the Dr. Ruth of mega-mergers.

Mario Gabelli loves to play matchmaker, and his ability to identify corporate hookups before they happen has made his clients lots of money over the years.

So when Dr. Love told us he was watching Protective Life, Interpublic Group and Hillshire Brands, we sat and took love notes.

Squawk on the Feet

After 18 years of running this show, I thought I'd seen it all. But now I can't unsee this!

Yes, I knew that every time Quirky CEO @BenKaufman came on the set, something weird happens. But when he gave Andrew a foot massage live on the air it was like the (toe) nails on the chalkboard.

Born in the USA

Pfizer tried to bolt for the corporate-tax-friendly havens of Europe. So could Merck be thinking along the same lines? Well Merck Chairman and CEO Ken Frazier said the drugmaker is proud to wear the Red, White and Blue. Though he did have some ideas on how to reform U.S. corporate taxes to level the playing field for American companies competing in the global economy.

Bacon news!

Despite a deadly pig virus, CNBC's Jane Wells reports for us that pork must go on.

What happens when you mix a conservative leaning Joe Kernen with a liberal leaning French economist? You get a "Kernetty" of course.

But so far this week, Beck is beating Joe 2 to 1. Joe's Jumbled word of the week is RCLEEA. Becky's word is SEETRD. Find the answers at the end of the blog.
