Squawking GoPro gold, CEO Snoozegate & GOPapalooza

Talking Squawk, the official "Squawk Box" blog, provides tidbits, insights, and some sarcastic reflections on the WEEK THAT WAS and the WEEK TO COME from the notepad of the show's senior executive producer.

'The original selfie'

It's one of the coolest AND hottest IPOs in a long time.

GoPro was founded by CEO Nick Woodman 12 years ago, and now it's a $3 billion HD-video, action-sports camera maker with plans to become much, much more.

Squawk co-host Becky Quick got the first interview with Woodman before the stock even opened Thursday, and got the whole story from his humble beginnings as a surfer to becoming a billionaire all before the age of 40.

(Watch the entire Woodman interview in the above video for his thoughts on the one thing all successful entrepreneurs share. For excerpts, click here for how his wife's fashion sense helped raise seed money, and here for why he doesn't like taking bathroom breaks when he works.)

Death of the PC?

Scott McNealy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems stopped by (fresh off his week of caddying for his 18-year-old son Maverick in the U.S. Open) and shared his thoughts on the future of the personal computer.

Alain Monie, CEO of tech supply chain company Ingram Micro, also weighed in Tuesday on the death of the PC—saying they're "less of the center of the universe" but will still play a part in our lives for years to come.

Green light on stocks

'Stupider than France'

Grover Norquist is the president of Americans for Tax Reform.

He came on the show Monday and blasted the federal government for "abusively taxing" Americans living overseas and U.S. companies competing in a global economy.

This is the reason some U.S. companies are looking to bolt for more favorable tax shores, he said.

"We do damage to American-owned companies that France doesn't do to French-owned companies," he continued. "Stupider than France is not where you want to be on tax policy."

GOP highlights

We had a who's who of the Republican party stop by this week on Squawk.

  1. Sen. Marco Rubio thinks the GOP establishment has lost its way.
  2. Haley Barbour says forget 2016, let's get through the midterm elections first.
  3. Sen. Bob Corker says raise the federal gas tax but lower other taxes to pay infrastructure projects.
  4. Sen. Rob Portman says it's time for the U.S. to develop a new corporate tax plan, fast.

Squawkward Moments

Squawk co-host Joe Kernen: "Yes they steal all kinds of stuff these days … for example, what would my underwear be worth?"

'Snoozegate'

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has apologized for falling asleep and arriving nearly two hours late to a dinner with marketers last week.

Is it JoePro ... or a ProJoe?

Nope, Joe wasn't jealous of GoPro founder and surfer-billionaire Nick Woodman because he can have cool hair too, courtesy of our show director @PaulDeFabo and our technical director @Keith_Falcone.

Just for the record, neither were the rest of us, NOT.

Word Jumble

The years-running, almost-daily Word Jumble was not kind to Beck this week. She did not get any wins. Joe got two. Joe's bonus Jumbled word of the week is YDEMAR. Becky's word is GDDEEH. Get the answers at the end of the blog.
