Chicago craft beer takes to the skies with United

The friendly skies are about to get a little friendlier.

Chicago-based United Airlines will soon offer Goose Island Beer Company's 312 Urban Wheat Ale on worldwide flights and in its U.S. airport lounges.

The partnership with Anheuser-Busch-owned Goose Island, also based in Chicago, is set to take flight July 1.

"Our customers have told us they want craft beer on board, and with the addition of 312 Urban Wheat Ale, we are able to satisfy their tastes with an excellent product," said Lynda Coffman, United's vice president of food services, in a statement.

Named after Chicago's primary area code, 312 Urban Wheat Ale will cost $8 in coach and come free of charge for business- and first-class fliers.

The Goose Island/United Airlines partnership is the latest to join a list of airlines looking to improve their in-flight food and beverages by offering craft beer brands. Among partnerships to take to the skies in the last year, Sam Adams parent The Boston Beer Company recently teamed up with JetBlue Airways and SweetWater Brewing Company tied up with Delta Air Lines.
