Google just lost the man who headed up some of the company's most mysterious, far-fetched projects.

Babak Parviz, who founded and led the Google Glass program, has left the company to work for Amazon. Parviz made the announcement via his Google Plus account simply stating "Status: super excited" with the Amazon logo accompanying his post.

Parviz was part of the Google X team, which is the company's somewhat secretive division that works on DARPA-like projects. It is responsible for Google's self-driving car, Google Glass and other developments like Project Loon, which is an effort by the company to provide Internet service via balloons.

Besides Google Glass, Parviz's research has also been focused on intelligent contact lenses, which would provide information via augmented reality, according to his bio page.

At Amazon, Parviz would likely focus on enhancing the company's efforts around optics, which could benefit products like the company's new Fire Phone.
