Squawking One Direction, Danica, and Super Mario

Talking Squawk, the official "Squawk Box" blog, provides tidbits, insights, and some sarcastic reflections on the WEEK THAT WAS and the WEEK TO COME from the notepad of the show's senior executive producer.

The Ebola outbreak in Africa has everybody concerned about the possibility of the virus spreading.

With this terrible humanitarian crisis unfolding, we called Richard Preston, author of the "The Hot Zone," which chronicled the discovery and deadly nature of the virus.

If you haven't read the book, read it.

This interview will give you an idea of how concerning the recent outbreak really is, and whether an outbreak is possible in the U.S.

What correction?

Despite the recent rout and possibility of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates sooner rather than later, uber-bull Jeremy Siegel on Monday was, well, bullish on the stock market.

Siegel, a professor of finance at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, told us that a Fed rate hike won't really impact the market's momentum in the near term.

Super Mario on media

There's a slim chance Rupert Murdoch's move to drop Twenty-First Century Fox's $80-billion bid for Time Warner could be a negotiating ploy, said Mario Gabelli, chairman and CEO of Gamco Investors on Thursday.

While "neutral" on the potential deal, the billionaire stock picker told us that the share price of the two companies, which he owns stakes in, could nearly double in five years.

Speed racer in shades

Danica Patrick was here to talk about her new sunglasses line with Revo. Becky, Andrew, and Michelle all put on the shades with her on set.

But the NASCAR driver also weighed in on social media.

In dealing with her more-than-a-dozen sponsors, she told us this week she does not like to overpromote on Twitter because she wants her 1 million-plus followers to know she's really the one tweeting.

Mac-ing on Danica

CNBC

Everybody on our staff knows and loves our stage manager Mac (I frankly don't know what Joe would do without him). Mac can handle just about anybody or any situation.

Celebrities, power brokers, senators, CEOs, star athletes, Hollywood stars. He's literally dealt with some of the richest and most powerful people in the world.

Nothing knocks Mac off of his game … well, nothing except when Danica Patrick comes into the studio. Then he just turns into a pathetic ball of mush.

(For the record Mac is happily married; we just like to embarrass him.)

Triple Crown contender search

Thoroughbred breeding is big business, so we sent CNBC's @MorganLBrennan to report from the Saratoga horse auction this week.

Morgan's producer Jess Golden - a.k.a. @JGolden5 - tweeted this photo from the stalls.

Cramer on Target

CNBC's @jimcramer shares his thoughts on Target after the struggling retailer issued an earnings warning on Tuesday. Basically, it's a yield play at this point, he said.

Is AOL A-OK?

AOL reported better-than-expected quarterly revenue, helped by a 60 percent jump in advertising revenue in its third-party platform.

Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong told us right after Wednesday's earnings release: "It's another quarter for us for consumer growth. We were the fastest growing multiplatform company."

Tweets of note

@BeckyQuick had the time of her life this week checking out some of her musical idols. She was so excited she even tweeted a whole series about her big night to remember.

Of course, her former co-anchor @CarlQuintanilla could help but chime in on the conversation (and her pain)!!!

Thanks to our CNBC colleagues @MCaruso_Cabrera, @SullyCNBC, @KaylaTausche, and @SteveLiesman who stepped in (at one point or the other) for Joe, Becky, and Andrew this week!

Here's a shout-out to @davebriggstv ... because he's our favorite sports guy who actually gets up and comes into the studio for the 6 a.m. ET hour!

And a HUGE welcome back to Executive Producer @SandyCannold who's returned to the Squawk family!
