Apple's flexible screen technology could be slow to market

Apple has patented new flexible display capabilities that could change the game for mobile devices, computers and even TVs, but it could take some time before consumers can get their hands on that technology.

"There are constantly new patents, and some come to market sooner than others ... It could be several years before this makes its way into mainstream," said Jeremy Rosenberg, senior vice president and head of digital at Allison+Partners.

According to Apple's filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, buttons, microphones, speakers and pressure sensors could be mounted under flexible displays, adding new functionality to devices without adding clutter.

But flexible displays have been a topic of discussion for years and there has yet to be a viable product for consumers that lives up to the hype, according to Rosenberg.

But once the technology does finally reach consumers, it could add features that help users type faster and allow for better noise cancellation, for instance, Rosenberg suggests.

"One of the keys to Apple's user experience has always been simplicity. Apple has historically been staunchly against adding any buttons to its mobile interface. This can provide a way to have more inputs integrated into the experience without any cluttering of the device," Rosenberg added.
