Samsung ups the ante with its latest innovations

Samsung has been a top contender in the smartphone space ever since it released its first smartphone and put the heat on Apple.

Samsung released a group of updated products on Wednesday as well as new ones which makes the competition even more fierce.

The Gear VR headset was a big focus, proving the Korean company is getting serious about virtual reality.

The headset virtually puts you in the middle of a situation, it could be a concert, on a roller coaster or playing a game.

"It's sort of a mind-blowing experience and it seems like where mobile tech is heading," said Mark Spoonauer, editor in chief at Tom's Guide.

Phones, of course, were also in focus. Samsung showed two new big-screen Galaxy phones.

The Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge both offer a quad high-definition screen, a more premium metal frame and improved pen functionality.

The Note Edge stood out more to Spoonauer because of the curved edge display on the screen. The curved display is the place to go for instant notifications, sports scores and apps.

"It's doing more with the available real estate and I think that's pretty innovative," he said.

The iPhone 6 and iWatch are widely expected to be available this month. "The pressure will be on, but Samsung is definitely still in the game," said Spoonauer.
