Space's greatest hits: NASA uses SoundCloud for space playlist

NASA is using a decidedly modern technique—SoundCloud, to be exact—to challenge an old meme about sound and outer space not being compatible bedfellows.

Like a music hipster, the agency has taken to SoundCloud to create an extensive playlist of audio clips associated with historic space voyages that cut across decades. The site functions as a time capsule of the heady years when the U.S. first blasted off into the great beyond.

Sound, of course, doesn't actually travel in the universe's infinite blackness. However, NASA has assembled a wide soundtrack that includes rocket launches, hypnotic radio waves emanating from the Earth's atmosphere, transmissions from various missions—and even clips from John F. Kennedy's historic speech that challenged the nation to put an American on the moon.
