On Staten Island, there are several bodies of water with names derived from the Dutch word "kille," or water channel. But for this 5-acre Victorian estate, nestled on Arthur Kill Road, the word "kill" takes on a different meaning.

The home was converted into a restaurant in 1996 and was the scene of a gruesome mob hit in 2005. The 3,300-square-foot mansion, which is on the market for $12 million, is also known for its tales of mysterious fires and apparition sightings.

The popular television show "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" depicted America's ideal fantasy couple. But is it legend or reality that the 5,813-square-foot home on Los Angeles' Camino Palmero Street is haunted?

Built in 1916, the home served as backdrop for the show. The actors Ozzie and Harriet Nelson lived on the half-acre estate for 25 years. Recent owners have reported seeing Ozzie's ghost and hearing mysterious footsteps throughout the five bedroom, four bath home.

The house is on the market for $5.25 million, which some consider a steal for the Hollywood Hills market.

Poveglia Island

Off the coast of Venice is an island with a dark past. This 17-acre island became a quarantine station for people who contracted the Black Death, or plague.

Italy sold Poveglia in May for a mere $672,000 to Italian businessman Luigi Brugnaro, but he will have to invest an estimated $16 million to rebuild the island's buildings. It's rumored Brugnaro wants to turn the island into a tourist attraction.

Lynnewood Hall

This 1900 Philadelphia-area landmark has more than 100 rooms and sits on 33 acres of land, but has fallen into disrepair.

The estate was built and formerly owned by businessman Peter Arrell Brown Widener. Although the $20 million price tag may seem like a steal for such a large property, it requires a buyer who can easily take on a restoration project that will cost far more than that price.

Schweppe Mansion

After the sudden death and suicide of its homeowners—Chicago socialites Laura Shedd and Charles H. Schweppe— the 24,500-square-foot home went empty for almost 50 years. There were tales that the couple's ghosts roamed its halls.

Soon after the home was purchased and renovated, the 10 bedroom, 15 bathroom estate went into foreclosure. With 400 feet of Lake Michigan beachfront, this property is currently on the market for $12 million.

'Addams Family Mansion'

At first glance, you would think that this five bedroom, two bath home was straight out of the 1950's television show "The Addams Family," but you would be mistaken.

This Australian estate, built in the Federation Queen Anne style, recently sold at auction for more than $3 million

Sleepy Hollow Mansion

This New York estate is tucked away on 16 acres of land in the area that inspired Washington Irving to write "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

Even better, the eight bedroom, eight bath mansion just got a price reduction to $8.9 million.

Colorado Ghost Town

If a haunted mansion doesn't suit you, you can purchase an entire ghost town for $2 million. The 250-acre town of Uptop, Colorado, is on the market after two sisters purchased it in 2000 in hopes of restoring it.

It's one of the best-known Hollywood tragedies: the Black Dahlia murder.

The brutal killing of the "Black Dahlia," a nickname given to Elizabeth Short, was never solved. One suspect was Los Angeles surgeon George Hodel. As a result, there has always been a lot of mystery surrounding his historic four bedroom, four bathroom home.

It has been the backdrop for several movies and it is now on the market for $4.9 million. The home recently underwent a $2 million renovation.
