Although retail sales posted a higher-than expected number on Thursday, CNBC's Jim Cramer is not impressed with most retail earnings that have been reported this week.

"It's just not a great setup," he said. "I think online is taking so much this quarter from bricks and mortar."

Macy's and Kohl's both reported disappointing numbers this week. Nordstrom is set to report on Thursday after the closing bell.

Cramer pointed toward Wayfair as a "category disruptor in furniture." "Their quarter was one of the most amazing quarters ever," he said.

On the other hand, in its conference call, Mayc's said that it was facing difficulties with its web component. "You can't keep up with the Amazons and Wayfairs," Cramer said.

"This is another category they are going to carve up, just like they did electronics and media," he added.

When Home Depot and Lowe's report next week, Cramer said, it could give a better indication as to where most retail dollars are being spent. "The American consumer is not going to the department stores or to strip malls."
