Online retail brokerage TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. said Friday that it will sell $1.25 billion in senior unsecured notes in a public offering and use proceeds to retire debt and stagger the maturity of its long-term bonds.

E-Trade Financial Corp. shares surged late Wednesday after media reports fed speculation that rival online broker TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. could make a bid for the company.

Moody's Investors Service on Monday lifted its investment-grade ratings on TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. one notch higher, citing the online retail brokerage's improved operating performance and reduced credit risks.
