Air France said Friday it would give about 17,500 euros ($24,000) as an advance to the families of the victims of the crash of Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

Two years ago here at the Paris Airshow the sun was shining, the champagne corks were flying and the fizz was flowing as the orders rolled in for Airbus and Boeing. Wind the clock forward to now and the story is very different.

This is the 100th Paris Airshow but the aviation industry has little to celebrate. The French government expressed deep disappointment Friday over the news that ocean debris recovered by the Brazilian military this week appeared to be the remains of a shipwreck and not from an Air France jet that crashed in the South Atlantic on Monday.

Delta Air Lines, Air France and KLM signed a deal Wednesday to combine two separate joint venture agreements into one to create a more integrated trans-Atlantic powerhouse that they said will generate $12 billion in annual revenue.
