Shares of construction and engineering companies traded mostly lower on Friday as the broader market trimmed heavy intraday losses after the Federal Reserve said it may allow Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to borrow money from the central bank if necessary.

For the first time in a long time, it looked as if oil was going to stay out of the market headlines.  No such luck.
