World Business

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

This Week on World Business - 20th November 2009

Cover Story: China Calling – Simon Mars  Over the last few years a resource hungry China has been making strategic investments around the world to secure access to raw materials, predominantly oil. One of the key areas attracting China’s attention is Africa, and in the last decade trade between Africa and China has grown tenfold.

Bargain Britain – Colleen Baldwin
When recession struck, the UK’s famously buoyant property market took a rapid dive.  But it hasn’t all been bad news.  Today wealthy investors from the Middle East and Asia are rushing to London to buy up trophy commercial buildings.  With asking prices and the value of sterling down, there are some good deals to be had for those seeking a secure home for their billions in bricks and mortar. But it’s also a useful vote of confidence for a capital city determined to keep its place as a world-class financial centre.

Interview with Idris Jala – Eckart Sager
When Idris Jala was hired in 2005, as CEO of state owned Malaysian airlines he had just 3 months operating cash in which to turn it around. He succeeded well beyond expectations. Two years later Malaysian Airlines achieved record profits and now the Malaysian Government has recruited Jala. As part of our Inside Malaysia series Eckart Sager sat down with Idris Jala who is tasked to fast track the country into a developed nation.

Tightening Ties – Graham Addicott
Virtually all western economies, as they fight their way out of the economic crisis, have realized the growing importance of increasing trade with emerging economies like Brazil and India. But only one, Italy, has come up with the idea of selling not just country to county; but also region to region.  We report on Italy's unique trade mission to India.
