World Business

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

This Week on World Business - 13th November 2009

Cover Story: World Economic Forum New Delhi – Eckart Sager
Over the last few years India has been one of the world’s great economic success stories, returning near double digit growth before the global recession took hold, and still returning reasonable growth even today. Politically too the country has grown in stature as the G20 nations began to eclipse the G8 on the world stage. We stopped by at the World Economic Forum summit in New Delhi to find out how this increasingly important nation is handling recession and the path it will forge in the future.
Hong Kong Resilience – Jane Peterson
India may be doing well in the global slowdown, but many places in the world have been struggling. Take Hong Kong’s economy, which in 2007 was growing at 6.4 percent, but was contracting by the end of 2008. However the island has bounced back, it has now emerged from recession and some sectors are very hot indeed.
Fall and Rise – Benjamin Rahr
It’s been 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which ushered in both freedom and a period of staggering economic growth for the countries of Eastern Europe. But the fall out from the global recession has taken a massive toll on these same countries. We went along to a conference sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to get some expert opinion on the impact of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Aiming High – Konstantinos Vassilaros
Every autumn thousands of people make the trek to the moors of Scotland and Northern England to indulge in some grouse shooting. The sport has had its ups and downs over recent seasons due to dwindling numbers, but this year the grouse are back in good numbers and so are the shooters that form a vital contribution to remote rural locations.

NEXT WEEK ON WORLD BUSINESS

Next week on World Business:
Over the last few years a resource hungry China has been making strategic investments around the world to secure access to minerals, which now account for 80 percent of the country’s imports. One of the key areas attracting China’s attention is Africa, and in the last decade trade between Africa and China has grown tenfold.
